Pyramid Lake and Truckee River Fishing Report for January 2, 2018

With the New Year brings a new Fishing Report. First off Happy New Year!

Pyramid Lake:

Fishing has slowed down, with the best bite coming the first couple of hours of day light. If you can with stand the cold mornings! Because of the cold we’ve been fishing a lot under the indo’s. Balanced Leeches or Baitfish have been good before the sunrise and continues for about an hour after. Once the sun gets on the water we’ve been doing well with midges(wine/copper). Mid day is really slow only getting maybe a fish or two.

The evening bite has been hit or miss! Even with good chop on the water some evenings the fish just don’t move back in. If your hands can handle the cold stripping black buggers or White/Chartruse Boobies have been our staple.

Truckee River:

The river is fishing really well right now, even though the only hatch is midges. The fish have been on small stones and micro mayflies. San Juan worms are already a great winter time staple for the Truckee! We’re staring to see some Skwalas flipping rocks and though we’re a couple months out, they’re starting to move around.

Most of the fish have been in the 2-3 year old class, 12-14”. We’ve been getting good numbers in the afternoons nymphing these guys. With all these fish around February and the BWO hatch is looking really good for our best dry fly fishing of the year!
